A large number of historic church buildings  are under threat because they will soon lose the right to a special refund.

The refund, which allows historic churches and other places of worship to claim back the VAT on the cost of repairs and maintenance, is due to end in March 2011.

Unless pressure is brought to bear on the government to continue the VAT refund, we might see some of our most important community buildings close.

Griff Rhys Jones backs campaign

TV personality Griff Rhys Jones is backing a campaign to protect churches by urging people to sign a petition to save a valuable repair grant scheme. "We want the Government to allow the money that people selflessly give to aid these national monuments to do exactly that, and not to line their coffers,' said Griff. 'There is no need for a tax on this work. It is robbing St Peter's to pay St Paul's."
